This compendium has been created by Jiri Vitek and
Jaroslav Kadlec - the leading Czech specialists on killifishes with
participation of 16 photographers from 8 countries.
It includes all aspects of Biology, Keeping, Breeding
and Taxonomy of killifishes including a Photogallery
and the List of all valid species.
Special attention is paid to those parts of the biology of killifishes that
have not been explained so far, or only to a very limited extent in aquarist's
books. Namely Ecology, Ethology, Embryology and Diapauses
and their role in the life cycle of the annual species. Plenty of ecological
and ethological data have been included in the interactive databases and the
text is supplemented with lots of photos of the natural killifish habitats.
The Embryology of killifishes is explained with
special regard to the differences between embryonic development of the non-annual,
semi-annual and annual species, and it is demonstrated
by many computer animations. One of the features of this book is two
Pictorial biological keys (partially animated)
to determine the stages of the embryonic development of the annual and non-annual
species developed specially for this project. In the part Diapauses
of killifishes, the biology of diapauses (including the effect of environmental
factors on the duration of diapauses) is explained, and two hypotheses (Wourms'
and Bellemans' hypothesis) of the role of diapauses in the life cycle
of annual killifishes are proposed.
In total, the book contains: 700 computer screens of
text (35 chapters) and photos, 1221 photos of fishes, habitats, etc., 144
charts, 61 maps, 24 computer animations, 22 tables, 17 photo-montages, 16
figures, 15 schema, 9 pictures, 7 databases, 5 spawning series, 5 stereograms,
5 quizzes, 3 indexes, 2 pictorial determination keys of the stages of embryonic
development and the list of all valid species of killifishes. The main part
of the documentation is a Photogallery that contains photos and short descriptions
of 49 genera and 440 species, populations and forms of killifishes.

New, remade, actualised and supplemented
version of Killifishes is planed to be published as series
of CDs dealing with various genera or geographic areas of these fish. The
GENERAL SECTION has been actualised to year 2007, with new design and is supplemented,
e.g. with computer animations of spawning. We used the newest killifish system
according to Killidata - Huber 2007. The list of all recently valid names
of species and genera is included.
The SPECIES SECTION of the CD deals with genus Aphyosemion.
This section is fully remade with new design. The INFO PART includes principal
data on Morphology, Ecology, and Keeping and Breeding of the species. Description
of each species is supplemented with lots of large photos of top-quality.
In total the CD includes almost 800 images (about 50 % are the photos of fishes), natural habitats, charts, maps, maps, tables, photo-montages, figures, schema, pictures, databases, spawning series, stereograms, quizzes, 2 pictorial determination keys of the stages of embryonic development, the list of all recently valid species, 30 computer animations of the embryonic development and spawning patterns of killifishes. As many as 16 authors and killifishes from 8 countries participated in this project.
